Confused by IT after Normal Results

First let me say IT WAS NORMAL!!!! :D) The reason I'm up set is after she was all through telling me it was normal she said that still dosen't mean you don't have "IT" ( my young girls were in the room so she didn't want to name the diease) and I said" what do you mean? I have no weakness and you just told me my emg was normal!" She said "you don't always have weakness first, and you just have to wait with time to tell." Then she says, as I'm leaving "don't worry be happy" Needless to say I'm going to be making a call to my nuero. I don't know what this all means but I'll keep you informed, also I don't know what kind of Doctor she was, but I bet you she wan't a nuero!

Hi Saundra,

Im delighted to hear that your test results are normal, way to go girl !!! She (the emg lady) is a disgrace, how dare she imply anything , how dare she suggest that its still possible to have some underlying horrific thing even after a clean emg with no weakness at all, who the hell does she think she is, certainly not a professional thats for sure, and possibly needs to do a course in people skills . Honestly I do not like people who try to play doctor and who place fear into the hearts of good people like yourself. Your results speak for themselves Saundra and thats all that counts, the truth is in the pudding so to speak , please dont be discouraged by off the cuff remarks and comments made by this person.

Take care,

Thanks Debb for the emcouriging words!! I called and found out she wasn't a nuero but a physical therapy Doctor, and I'm not foing to let what she said get to me!!

I've read about 100's emgs and never heard that somebody told something like that after a clean exam. Propapbly she wanted to be smarter than she was.

Hi Saundra,
Great news on your EMG! Don't give the person who did it a second thought, she obviously didn't know what she was talking about. There has never been a report in any medical journal anywhere that I'm aware of where someone had a normal EMG and then went on to develop ALS; and believe me I have looked! What she said was not only incorrect, it was very unprofessional.

Unbelievable!!!

The PT doen't know better, and I'm surprised she did the EMG in the first place. The reason I say this is because there are six neurologists at the office I go to. My normal neuro doesn't do the EMGs....they have only one neuro in the office who does them routinely. They made me believe that he's the 'go-to' neuro expert for this type of stuff.

Personally I have no clue if the EMG is a cinch to administer or if someone has to be highly qualified to do it....regardless, I'd discuss this with your neuro and make sure that someone speaks to the PT about her absurd remarks....not only was she incorrect, but she was horribly inconsiderate as well.

Did your neuro have any other follow-up comments?---or are you still waiting to speak to him/her? Look forward to hearing more....and very happy to hear that we have (surprise :D) ) another clean EMG on this board!!!

Amy,

I am waiting for a call back from my neuro office, and I am requesting, a return visit to discusse what was said, and have some other questions answered. I'll keep you updated.

I got a call from my neurologist office and his nurse told me he said no ALS, that the test are concluesive with BFS, he said we don't know what causes it and it could stay for any length of time, and it can just go away, basically everything that is said here. Of course she didn't have any answer for what the other Dr. said to me, I am choosing to ignore it and call it ignorance!!

My dear Saundra,

This is total B.S. I am soooo sorry you had to hear something so unprofessional. I WOULD FILE A COMPLAINT. Please do!!!

There are several of us here who haven't even had an EMG, and just by our neuro exams, were told we don't have ALS because TWITCHING WITHOUT OTHER PROBLEMS IS COMMON AND CAN MEAN A ZILLION THINGS INCLUDING NOTHING AT ALL!!! Many of our doctors just looked bored or at us like we are crazy cause this is SO NOT AN ISSUE.

And here is this woman telling you some scare story, which may have happened once or twice in the history of medicine. . . and who's to say their EMG's weren't read by incompetants to begin with!

And to think i was *beep* cause a receptionist tried to scare me, but at least she wasn't a doctor. There is no excuse for that whatsoever.

Please keep us posted.

Saundra,

I wouldn't give the comments made by anyone, except for a qualified neurologist, a second thought. It is obvious that this lady has some issues she needs to deal with, and she needs to educate herself, before spouting info that is not true. Everything I've read and been told by neuro's is that emg is the definitive diagnostic tool for identifying possible als. By that i mean that a clean emg rules out als and at the same time problems on the emg don't necessarily equal als. But if you have als, it would be quite obvious that there is a problem during emg exam.

On the other hand, I've had two neuro's tell me that they couldn't garauntee that I would never get als. But like one of those two said, he couldn't garauntee that my wife wouldn't get it either. One thing that three highly trained and qualified neuros did tell me was that bfs doesn't make it any more likely that someone will get als.

Rest easy and be re-assured by the good emg results. You don't have als :D) . That is the best news I've heard today.

Take care,

Gary
