Concerning Worrying Hand Symptoms

I know I came on here a few days ago worrying about my hand but guys I am really sure there is something wrong with it. I noticed yesterday that (this is a bit hard to describe) on the outside of my hand (if you follow the outside edge of the hand from the pinky finger down to the wrist) about half an inch above the wrist my hand goes in like there is a chunk missing! The other hand is definitely not like this! Now that hand feels odd like the pinky and ring fingers are getting slightly weak and I am freaking out!I am going to die and leave my kids and husband. OMG OMG!Am crying now so have to go have a little sob somewhere.Nikki x

Nikki, relax. I'm not sure if this is your left or right hand, but if I understand you correctly, then I have the same thing on my left hand. My 'dent' is about half an inch up from that big bone on the outside of the wrist. Mine is kind of on the side of my hand and a little on the back of my hand... If that makes sense. When I move my right wrist and hand around I can see that I do have one on my right hand too, but it's tiny. Maybe because I'm right handed? The weakness could be stress because you think something is wrong? I'm sure you're fine.

Hi thanks for your reply. I know what you mean about thinking you have one on both sides as I thought that for a while too but this is like that dent has extended round towards the palm and so if you look at the palm the bottom curves in before it should slightly. Like a small section (sort of crescent moon shaped and only 2mm deep) is missing.Any thoughts? Am still very anxious and am making a doctors appt tomorrow. If it is atrophy how long does it take to show in a big way?Nikki

Hi Nikki-I have the same thing. My entire right forearm and hand is completely different from the left. I have some MAJOR dents in my hands/forearms and my thighs! Panic can cause you to almost completely shut down, I have been to the point where I was walking like a robot checking my leg muscles thinking my right leg was weaker! Look back at my posts regarding this to make you feel better. The muscle they worry about is the muscle between your thumb and index finger for atrophy. Thats why you see people freaking out about it (like I have) on here, when you can also have carpal tunnel and other things that cause it. They NEVER have checked any other muscle in my hands at all and I get twitches all over them frequently. Thats why you see people freaking out about it, when you can also have carpal tunnel and other things that cause it. If you test your pinky fingers with any method they are going to get weak and not work right, expecially the one you are most concerned about. The normal neuro exam focuses on you squeezing the doctors fingers and they are concerned about your thumb and index grasp. I broke my pinky bone in my left hand and cant even grip with it, and none of the doctors worried about it. Everything will be fine! I have been going through the strength/dent thing for almost 3 years now, and if you want to talk about anything just PM me anytime! I have been through it all and am more than willing to help you through this!Sean

I've seen atrophy in the muscle between the thumb and forefinger (someone I know badly damaged his ulnar nerve in an accident). It's unmistakable. It's not just a "dent"—it's very noticeable.Perceived weakness, and even "true" minor weakness, is hardly unusual and is nothing to worry about. My hands feel like crap much of the time, in part due to RSI from using the computer so much. They hurt when I use them for moderate periods of time (cleaning up the wires behind the entertainment center today, for example), and feel weak sometimes. They've been like this for over two years, and they still work fine. You'll be fine too.

High Nikki,I don't have much to add because the post you got cover it all. I just feel bad for you. We have all been thru what you are going thru. You are just now noticing all the dents, curves, flat spots, weird things on your body. My left forearm has a big chunk out of the side of it. When this all started 2 years ago I noticed it and almost passed out! Seriously. 2 years later it is still the same including my weird uneven feet/arms/legs/hands. Hang in there it will get better.DD

First of all, let me tell you, you are not going to die yet, you are going to live a natural span.I do have atrophy in my left hand, it is actually apparant over the entire hand (not just a dent somewhere) it is a lot thinner in profile than the other one, you can tell by feeling there is less muscle there and I have had that confirmed by a specialist, not just on one side of the hand but on both. As Bandersnatch_F says, the Ulnar nerve is often to blame. The good news is that even if you are right about your suspicions as to the differences between your hands, it certainly is not the end of the world and it does not mean the worst diagnosis you can imagine. In all probability you just have natural variation.
