CK Enzyme and Neuro Muscular Disorders

Hi everyone- :) I was persusing my blood tests taken at Mayo Clinic. One of the tests was for an enzyme called Creatine Kinase....or CK.I discovered it is usually elevated in many neuro muscular disorders (breakdown or degeneration of muscles)--AND also elevated in that A-*-...that may of us worry about.Mine was normal. ;) But, I was happy to see that my Mayo neuro was so thorough....he checked this enzyme (along w many others)-Sooo, if it would help with any of you out there for your "peace of mind"---ask for the CK blood level, in your blood test. Have a nice day--& please---if your neuro says you do not have..."it"--you do NOT! (now...i'm just a bit concerned about my slightly elevated "calcium"...level-! :( My neuro at Mayo did not seem too concerned..& it was not that high outta 'normal'-! (Said...it could be my "multi vitamin...which contains calcium...& i take a vitamin C....which also contains...calcium! I switched my "vitamin C"..tab...to a plain..."just vitamin C tablet!)-- Yet--Wed---i saw my cardiologist--& showed it to him----I asked him.."What can cause elevated Calcium levels....in a blood test?"Get this...people....he says...."Lots of things...among them.....multiple myeloma" ! Which is, I found out--a deadly bone cancer! I said to him..."Dr...WHY did you tell me that?" :( :( His response....."Well...YOU asked!"Then...he laughed & said.."But you do not have multiple mylenoma."----OK.....but.,....guess what---that comment got me back into seeing that horrid guy...........................Dr. Google-! :( See...we hypos just can't win-! Any others out there.....get a 'clean'...neuro bill of health--only to 'move on'...to something else? :( - C-88 PS-*(I should add....a friend of mine, a nurse, just yesterday-- told me i should not worry about that--since...not only are elevated calcium levels common...but....all my other 'blood studies'...were..'normal"....including my "sedimentation rate"...which measures inflammation & is...always elvated n multiple mylenoma--but see how we worry!? )--but---again...for peace of mind regarding ALS---have your CK blood level taken! Along with an emg....you should feel...'home free'---C-88 :)

Christian,Excellent post, and again you are the most colorful poster here, I can see someone gesticulating, as I read your posts. Its obvious you write for a living. :) Anyways, your Calcium test could have also been a fluke. It happened to me with my potassium a few months ago - out of range high. Dr said test again, then in range on the lower side on next test.I once thought I had read that in A word CK was commonly elevated in later stages, but I could be wrong. SO I will ask in time to get it tested again, first time it was checked it was normal for me :D) JoggingCub

Hi Running Bear--thank you so very much, for complimenting me..on my "writing style"-! :D) Gee...i never knew my style was so...."entertaining"- ;) Take care...& keep in touch--regards--Christian

ck can be elevated with many things, even with bfs. don't be surprised if you get tested with elevated levels. and don't get anxious again. it does not say you have als!!! i think it is useless to test the ck. a positive result may only arise your anxiety level again. the emg is the one and only test that can point away from lower motoneuron als.

I've had that test run twice. 509 in Oct 09; 556 in June 2010. Both elevated, but my neuro still dx's bfs, so I have to trust him. I work out a lot and he said that if you work out, your CK level may be high. So don't freak out if it comes back high. Go by what your neuro says.In addition to 100 other tests, I also had an elevated C Reactive Protein test, which is generally done for heart issues but is also can be a good indicator for inflammation in the body. In June 2010, my neuro ran it and it came back at 5.1 (normal is <3.0). Later in the month, he ran tests for Celiac's (came back negative), but also reran the CRP test. It was lower, but still high at 4.4. This concerns me and even my neuro said that he doesn't know what to make of it (and he's the head of neurology at Ohio State!). But again he doesn't seem to be concerned by the reading, so I am trying not to be. But it could be another test for you to have run.
