Calf Pain After Running

Hey there,Little background here. 36 male that has been healthy my entire life with the exception of mild hypertension and bilateral carpal tunnel (confirmed with a NCS). This April, I decided it was time to get back into shape and started running. I woke up one day and went to the computer to check my email and noticed my calves felt strange. Thought nothing of it till later that night when I got the feeling again and examined my calves. I noticed twitching and like an idiot I googled twitching calves. After reading a few **s websites I entered an immediate state of panic. I scheduled an appointment with my GP and he assured me I didn't have **s because it's a disease of weakness and not twitching. I felt relieved for about 4 hours and then the anxiety came back even stronger as I continued to google my symptoms. Since that day, both my calves twitch anytime I am at rest whether it be sitting in a chair or in bed. I have no weakness and I still run and play sports without any problems. I measured my calves when this started and they are the exact same today (16.5 inches). I guess I am just looking for a little reassurance that this is benign (which is hard to accept that it is benign for both calves to be twitching for 3 months). There have been a total of 2 days where I didnt have twitches in almost 3 months. If I did have the dreaded disease I would certainly notice some weakness after 3 months of twitching right?. When my anxiety is high, I notice twitching in other parts of my body like my hamstrings, biceps, and abdomen. I am starting anesthesia school in 6 weeks and just want my life back! Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hey Chad :D) Yep, sounds like BFS to me...in fact...it sounds like textbook BFS. Trust your Doctor...and yourself, (you know you dont have anything scary other than anxiety), take back control over your stress & anxiety levels, and I'm willing to bet you wont even notice the twitching a few months from now...or if you do...you just wont care. ;) Seriously, 1st priority is to put the anxiety in check...like NOW before it spirals out of control. You have seen a Doctor who told you that you were fine...from what you describe...I think you are too. :D)

Welcome! Yep, sounds just like BFS. I have also been twitching for 3 months mostly in my legs but have had twitches all over my body as well. My neurologist diagnosed me with BFS back in May (and also June when I saw him again after freaking out). The anxiety is the worst part of all this but this board really helps alot. I still have freak out days when I think something major is wrong but then I come here and everyone calms me down. I think you will be fine but it may take awhile for the anxiety to subside.

Welcome, it sounds like classic annoying BFS to me. My calfs have been twitching 24/7 since may 2008. Only in the last 6 months I can say that im now fairly comfortable with my BFS diagnosis. On stressful/anxious days I feel twitching all over, I just repeat to myself that I've had a diagnosis and these twitches are just part of me( at least for the foreseeable future), of course this is easier said than done. On my initial diagnosis I was constantly self testing ( My wife thought I was BARKING ). This self testing is now reduced to just a glance at various muscles now and again. I think the key to seeing light at the end of the tunnel is to relax as much as possible and establish a regular sleeping pattern and when a new twitch/symptom causes concern read BFS in a nutshell.Hope this helpsDavo
