Bulbar Symptoms and EMG Results

Hi all

Noticed a rash of posts regarding clean limb emg followed by bulbar panic.

I have long had concerns about bulbar symptoms. Had a clean emg (limbs only) then wondered about tongue, jaw etc.

My rational self says 'initial symptoms were twitching in shoulder (which went away) calves and feet. No doctor wants to see me again, not even for a six month follow up. So why do I have moments of panic?'

I saw a dentist yesterday as I had some trouble with a tooth and I told her I had occasional speech problems. Her response? You do not have speech problems. Just hearing you speak is enough for me to say with confidence, you do NOT have speech problems

So, thought it might be reassuring to others who are in the same boat to know that there are some of us with these issues and that it most likely can be a symptom of bfs (and anxiety no doubt)

Here are my bulbar symptoms:

speech problems (percieved probably but anyway..) have trouble with certain consonent blends. words with 'st' like faster. That's it for the speech. been like this for five months. no change, wonder if I always had a bit of a problem with 'st' words but only just started obsessing over it

Jaw twitching Happens about three times a week. I do have tmj (where you clench your jaw) and often wake up in the morning with scallop marks on my tongue where I have beeb clenching during the night. Have a sore jaw too, most probably for the same reason

Swallowing Sometimes feel I have difficulty getting food down. Other times, no problem. Again, this has been 'going on' for over five months with no progression

Lastly (and the most sexy :D) ) excess saliva Comes and goes. Particularly noticeable if I am focussing on it (hmmm....)

Anyway, sorry for the 'me, me, me' ramble. I hope anyone else with bulbar stuff which is bothering will post their 2c as it is quite clearly a concern for some and would be good to know we are not alone with these issues

Cheers, Julia

You can count me in on Bulbar symptoms. I often feel that my speech is worse but I have not had anybody comment my speech so I guess it is mostly in my head. It has not got any worse over about a year or more.

Today during the lunch at my work I choked on some food perhaps because I was trying to talk while eating !. Episodes like this scares the hell out of me but then again I am about 2½ years into this and should not let anything surprise me any longer. Sometimes I can't control my mind and I can't help wondering what this could be.

I have also tightness and mild soreness in my jaw from time to time.

Lots of other BFS'ers have complained about bulbar symptoms - I think it is quite common.

I have never had twitching of the tongue.

I only got like this back in November when i thought I was on my last legs... :) as soon as I realized I was fine (when I found this site and saw my GP) I recovered, so I put that one down to anxiety. I do trip over my words often but I think I always did. Of couse I like to deliberately wuddle my mords up too for comedy effect :)

I do suffer from throat problems anyway though, tonsillitis and Pharyngits and hay fever, lucky me. I've been getting lots of sore throats recently and lots of neck pain too but I don't think any are linked to BFS. One weird thing I have had since before I first noticed the twitches was to do with my tongue. When I was lying in bed trying to get to sleep it felt like my tongue was enlarged. Still get that from time to time. Sorry if I've just planted that though in your heads

Count me in for bulbar symptoms. I have been obsessing about them ever since I got the all clear on my limb emg/ncv and mri. It's like I've focused all of my fears and anxiety on that part of my body now. I also have horrible tree and grass allergies which reak havoc with throat with post nasal drip, sore throat, coughing, etc. Of course these only make me think bulbar more, even though I've probably had them every year around this time and this is the worst allergy season in years here in New York. I'm going for a barium swallow today for my own sanity. Hopefully it will show that I'm swallowing fine and much of this is anxiety!

God Bless

yes , this was just like me. i just posted something about this if you check my previous posts, it's titled "emg upday on tongue" or something like that, if you want more details. suffice to say i had all that crap, plus tongue twitching and all is well on tongue/face/neck emg.

hope that helps!

Julia,

I have had difficulty swallowing for over a year now. It comes and goes. I can actually swallow, but it feels like it gets stuck in the base of my neck.

Thanks for your encouraging pm, btw.
