BFS: Twitching in Back & Thumb

1. Is twitching in the back behind shoulders normal for BFS? I have read that only twitching in limbs is suggestive of BFS. I have hip persistent twitching and also some back (nonpersistent).2. The ALS symptoms that says: "It sometimes begin with noticing a small twitch on your hand that just doesn't go away", this means if the whole problem starts like this? I now have a thenar thumb muscle twitch for 5 days that is just a small twitch in one muscle that just doesn't go away :( But it is not the first thing to notice, I am here 10 months.Thank you for your helpJerry

Jerry, You should not worry. In my case, twitching started on the left hand, then spread to the left arm, then neck and now is everywhere. Every week I have different “hot spots”, and they are not only in the limbs. Head, belly, back, crotch, neck... This is part of BFS.

i have all over body twitching, back, shoulders and near my ribs for over 16 months now...as for the thumb twitch the thenar twitch is a very common one with bfs sufferers..i have both my thenar muscles twitching for months now...almost forgot i get butt and hip twitches too.... :D)

I have a lot of butt and hip twitches also :-/So you say I could be having thenar twitch for a long time? I never had any twitch last longer than few days and this one is staying :( Sometimes my thumb moves, sometimes not, bit it looks like the same muscle is moving not like 5 muscles but one group. Not like worms, but more like lightning.

I had thumb and finger twitching!! It was not fun either. I do also have it in my stomach, back, both inner shoulders, and just everywhere. Lol, just had a back twitch! I hated when my upper lip twitched for a week! It ruined my week to say the least! When my finger started... Oh I really, really freaked!! I couldnt' stop it really even by moving, it just wanted to twitch!

Hi Jerry, yes my thenars have twitched for months...and I know it's such a great place to stare at them isn't it..I mean they are right there...not like feet...please don't worry a twitch is just a twitch..and just think of the amount of work your hands do everyday..it's only natural that they twitch, I know my butt doesn't do much and it's a common twitcher... :D)

Well, mine didn't twitch for 40 years before :( Yes, I have constant foot twitching but I guess I am used at it, I don't look at it no more, but the thumb twitch is scarier for me, because I can see it and feel it very nice most of the time, and if it moves when on the mouse I ccan feel it even better.

I know Jerry mine didn't twitch either for 45 years...but now it does...I think the hand twitches are scarier for some people because u can actually see it and feel it... ..but it is no different to any other twitch..you have a body with over excited nerves..why should your hands be any different to anywhere else..best wishes shanny

My problem is that I can not believe constant twitching in my thumb for a week without stop can be benign. I have never in 10 months had such 24/7 twitch anywhere. I am just waiting my thumb will become weak and I guess I can wait for few months now. I am not saying I am right, I am saying how I feel. 1 muscle in thumb is allways moving, I can feel it or not. Add to that constant foot arch twitching and nearly constant hip twitches and my mind can not see a benign reason why this would start happening after 10 months if it was benigh. On top of that I have less sensory symptoms now. I don't think there is a dwarf in my head trying to figure out how to fear me the most and thinking of a new ways to do it.

So you think the people that happen to know about ALS and are anxious can not have ALS? I don't think that excludes the disease. Anyway, I hope you are right and the persistant twitches stop.

Jerry - I have the thumb thing too and my twitches started in the thumb. I actually thought about PD at first and was mortified I had that! You can believe what you want but my money is on JonnytheJet. I truly believe he knows what he is talking about and hope you start to have some confidence in him as well. Moreover, he once told me he would bet the farm that I was OK. If I am not, he has to take care of me on his farm. And I want ruby red slippers too. I am ambivalent about Toto.

I agree with Johnny. The things written in the first post are just irresponsible to bring to this board. They are not fact and will only cause needless worry. Jerry, I have 24/7 twitches in several areas on my body. My calves, feet, and forearms twitch nonstop. In addition to this, my eyelid has been twitching since January, my pinky toe twitched for 6 straight months without stopping, I had a twitch above my kneecap that lasted nearly 3 months. So 2 weeks is nothing.

Thanx. I didn't understand what you meant. The thing is I am progressing in spirals so to say but getting lower. I am not good than bad and then good. I have more twitching than ever after 10 months.Luckily the twitching is in my other hand not the "atrophied" one (neuro words). The atrophied one I also have severe thumb pain that I feel like very stiff and painfull thumb (MCP joint, the one that attaches to the visible palm). Now that I have twitching in other ("healthy") hand I am also developing same kind of joint pain. It is a wierd pain, because at some moments it is much better but at night it goes to worse again.Anyway, I rather have twitching in my normal hand that the one there was suspected atrophy, althought I try to believe it is not different or worse than 10 months ago.I didn't mean to scare and offend anybody. But my neuro told me my hand is suspected atrophied, so nobody would bet me with a farm I guess. He was wrong, but that idea of twitching and atrophy still hunts me to this day.Sorry all if you think I wrote somthing inappropriate. I guess what you try to say is ALS doesn't start bodywide and "progresses" to 3 contant point of twitches + stil stays bodywise but goes the other way. And that the twitch once it is in, never settles. So if my thumb twitch goes away in a months, that dismiss the malign possibility one and for all.
