BFS After Flu -Time Frame?

My BFS seems to have happened right after I had the flu (a very bad case of it)- past November-As one poster here so correctly stated, -*the immune system attacks the nervous system, doing damage (while also attacking the flu virus)-*Now- My neurologist (movement disorder specialist) told me- "This will go away! But I can't tell you the time frame."Last time i e-mailed him, alarmed that the symptoms had changed-he politely responded-"Do NOT be alarmed! With neuro issues, change is often a sign that your condition is resolving." I assume (him being a neuro--movement disorder specialist)- he knows about this better than me--OK--I ask you--1) (VERY important)-** Will it or DOES it ever go away completely? (Does the nervous system "heal" itself?)-* 2) And for those who have had it go away (or knew others who had it go away)--are changes one of the signs? And--What is an "average" length of time? (I know it varies from person to person---)-My changes are1) it USED to be purely "positional"! (Worst when I reclined)- Now--I can recline---& often nothing happens! Also--my "strong" myoclonus are now 'milder" fasics---& the cramping less often...& less severe--tho--they are still there2) My myoclonus/fasics/cramps---come & go during the day--in "clusters"....I'm OK when i get up---& can be OK--until say---2 PM...when they start---& stay the rest of the day---or --just maybe 2 or 3 hrs!3) Also--in the last 6 weeks or so--I've had "total remissions"...of like 3 or 4 days...with NO symptoms! (I think it's...gone---only to have it return--but--hoping the remissions become more frequent and longer)Hoping to hear some optimistic things (maybe Mario-Amy or the MD can add their expetise-)--that , at least can give me..."hope"- :) Thanks again -Christian

Christan,I have had BFS for about 5 months. A month or so ago I thought things were resolving, as everything ( the twitching) was settling down. A few days later...bang back with avengence. I dont believe this something that is going to go away over night. I have good days and not so good days. The nervous system is hyped, after a long time ( in my case via anxiety/stress/worry) of being chronically stimulated. That will take a long time to resolve it self. And I know a large part of the resolution is to get my anxiety in order. That is the hard part, and that is why I know I will be stuck with this crap for a while. I would guess you are having a good day (maybe the anxiety has lessened after talking to people on this board! :D)) But I wouldn't hang my hat on being cured just yet! PS you do get used to a certain amount of twitching after a while ( you dont focus on it), so it is not as noticable.cheersRodger

2.5 years for me... I think most people have twitches here and there but they just ignore them. If you suffer from health anxiety though, once you've become hyperaware of the twitches, you can never just simply ignore them. For me, I think the answer is out there, but I have some mental block that precludes me from doing it. I think if I journal every day, take time out for meditation and exercise, then I would become vastly improved. I just don't do it.

Hi Christian,I started twitching August 07. I worked on my anxiety over this and have completely recovered from it May 09. I had counselling for ages and I practiced diligently what my counsellor told me to do. for me the key to recovering was believing that I didn't have an illness and that it would resolve itself over time if I stopped being fearful and worrying over it. My twithcing didn't disappear suddenly, they came and when but once I felt they really began to lose intensity I really noticed a "buzzing"feeling in my body. I took that as a positive sign that my condition was improving. I didn't look at it as a change in my symptoms (basically just went with it and stopped adding more worries) and then it disappeared. So complete recovery is realistic. Don't get disillusioned because I bet your bottom dollar there are many people that do recover but don't come back on this site to share their success
