BFS: 1 1/2 Years Later

After coming in here and reading posts for a couple of months I cannot believe that I am still worried. Everytime I have an *** symptom I log on and find out that someone else has had it too and it is probably just another manifestation of bfs. I was diagnosed with bfs about 1 1/2 ago and the twitching and *** symptoms continue, but this site helps me deal with them. However, this latest one is pretty scary so I am sucking it up and actually posting. I dont mean to waste anyone's time and I would appreciate any feedback. My right leg from the knee down feels stiff/numb. When I streth out my calves or toes I can feel the muscles stretching in my left leg but only slightly in my right. Its kind of like I am losing feeling. I hope its just bfs and but it seems like such a weird sympton. Like all of us, I am having a hard time convincing myself that something other than a terrible disease is causing this. Any help?

Hi Will and welcome on board

Firstly, don't ever feel you are wasting anyone's time. we all (even a lot of the heroes) started out desperate for advice and reassurance.

I can certainly relate to the stiffness in the calves. I freak out about it periodically but mostly realise that it's a bfs thing.

As for numbness, I dont personally get it but I typed 'numbness' into the search button and it came up with 438 matches

I'm sure many people will post that numbness has, at some time, been a symptom for them

Please be aware also, that numbness, being a sensory symptom, is not consistent with ***

It is really hard sometimes to feel relaxed about new symptoms popping up and challenging our mental state, but one and a half years into your bfs diagnosis, I reckon you are on very solid ground :D)

Take care, Julia

Will – I agree with Julia about your being on “solid ground.” And we’re here to help calm each other down, so that’s NEVER a waste of time. I’m surprised myself at the amount of time that you can be twitching, when you think you’ve experienced it all, and new symptoms come up. This is based on my own experience and what others have posted. I’m entering month 8, and just recently started experiencing an achy, crampy right calve. Also, in January I started having a weird indescribable feeling in my right leg (felt weak, rubbery, tingling?), yet it wasn't actually weak. Just this past week, it seems to have stopped. Basically, I’ve come to expect this kind of thing. If my muscles still work well (yeah I admit it, I self test :p ), I try not to worry about it.

I don't know if I made it to hero or saint yet but I have to tell you that I still have moments of fear and uncertainty. Posting is the right thing to do. Put it out there and allow people to come to your aid. That's cool

Okay, I have also had what you are describing in my left calf. This pops up every now and again where it just does not feel right. In the mornings in the past this would be especially the case and i would get a numbness feeling with every step.

Sensory symptoms mean no als. That was a quote from my neuro. Also you would be a medical miracle going 18 months without weakness. You, yes you, would be the longest case know to science of twitching before weakness and you would have it won by 5 months!!! The probability is well as close to 0 as you can get.

Hang in there and post anytime. Keep us up to date on that leg and, meanwhile, I will be praying for you.

Peace,
marks

Welcome.

Julia is right. Don't EVER feel like a bother, or a question is dumb, or anything like that. That is the purpose of this board. To give one another support.

I can't believe that after 2 years I still fret and angst over my symptoms. I often wonder if I'll feel like this the rest of my life! ALS is a very, very scary disease. For a lot of people, once the fear takes hold, it is very hard to release (like me)

I am experiencing stiffness lately, too. You aren't alone. I've had numbness in my right toes on/off for years now. It comes and goes. Remember, sensory symptoms are not indicative of motor neurone disease.

I am now going to tell you what my neuro said (I am repeating it for myself, too): Twitching as long as you have been, with no weakness or atrophy, is not ALS.

I hope this helps. It is difficult to believe sometimes when it is happening to ourselves, but we have to try.

Hang in there.

Ginny

Just found this site. Very informative and helpful. I've been twitching all over to varying degrees for 4 years. It comes and goes. I've had strange feelings in my legs and arms on and off for the whole time. Not as much a numbness like pins and needles but more of a sensation of loss of feeling altogether which was always percieved by me as a feeling of "weakness". Of course it isn't weakness...I am strong as ever. Nuerologist told me 4 years ago I was OK and I still have doubts. The mind is a crazy thing sometimes.
