Autoimmune Conditions and BFS

Assuming this is an autoimmune condition (and for my own case, I believe it is and my neuro is thinking the same), I have been plagued by canker sores on and off for 7 or more months. I think they are due to any autoimmune response. Neither my GP, my neuoro or my dentist can give me any answers about them other than just agreeing with me that they are due to some autoimmune issue.

I have Antiphospholipid Syndrome - an autoimmune condition that causes my blood to be in a hypercoagulative state. I was diagnosed with it about 16 years ago. I am on Coumadin for life due to this. Every few years they check for the antibodies and I'm still producing them. In college I had a severe case of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura - an autoimmune condition in which my body was destroying my platelets almost as fast as it was creating them. I found out later that ITP is often secondary to APLS, so they may be related. Currently I'm having issues with my ANA levels. The titer was above what could be measured on the test (over 1:2560). APLS is sometimes secondary to Lupus, however I have none of the clinical signs or symptoms of Lupus. My rheumatologist has ordered additional tests to determine the subsets of the ANA I am producing. I had an appointment with my hematologist yesterday. I have been taking minocycline for years and according to him, it can cause drug induced lupus and high ANA, so I stopped taking it last night. I see the rheumatologist again a week for those test results so I will mention this to him. I hope this is the case for me. My rheumatologist, hematologist and neurologist all claim BFS is not autoimmune related, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is. BTW, I started with BFS in Jan of this year. Take care, -Nancy

Hey,Interesting you mention antiphospholipid syndrome, i recently tested positive for beta 2 glycoprotein but negative for apl and lupic coagulant. I do not meet criteria for diagnosis though, i had no thrombotic event and you have to test positive 2 times as some infections can cause these markers to rise. I heard that people with afs have headaches with aura more often than the average population, i started having these last year after the onset of bfs. For the first 12 months of bfs i had around 10 cold sores which i usually dont get and 3 sores on my hard palte which are unusual too. My ana is negative.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, although it's been undetectable in my blood since BFS symptoms started. Weird!Gilbert's syndrome, not sure if it's autoimmune. Just means my bilirubin levels are sometimes slightly out of range.Tested positive for the "n" calcium channel antibody in the paraneoplastic autoantibody panel. Doc said that can often be idiopathic or a result of another autoimmune condition usu. thyroid.

Well, I have thyroiditis...but my bloodwork showed thyroid was okay, so I haven't been officially diagnosed with a thyroid condition. It showed up enlarged on my cervival spine MRI and then an ultrasound showed that it was enlarged with a tiny benign cyst..my md said that it meant that I would probably end up with hypothyroidism which my mom has and my dad had.....

anxiety, stress and hypochondriac... I consider autoimmune cause it works against my well being and causes my body to freak out as well. I wish I could get it under control.
