Arm Feeling Heavy and Weird

I've had that feeling before...not exactly sure how your situation feels, but mine felt as though the arm wasn't weak, just heavy and weird. It went away in a few days.

Actually I suffered from a weak feeling in my left arm right at the beginning of my BFS experience 19 months ago.....

I guess the million dollar question is whether your arm is still fully functional in terms of holding and lifting things you are familiar with... If so, almost certainly anxiety / bfs related, if not it could be anything but probably worth waiting a couple of days to see if there are any changes and then having it checked by a GP.

Best of luck!

Thanks everyone

I can still lift etc with it (spend most of my time carrying my son who is 18 months, 27lbs and STILL not walking!) with it and my hand functions fine.

Des, just interested (as you're in the UK too) if your GP referred you to a neuro? I saw mine at the beginning of this (twice) and he refused to refer me after doing a basic neuro exam.

Aaah... The joys of the good old NHS!!! :D)

Actually I went to my GP, did the clinical tests, and left the building.... Had a few really nasty hot spot episodes in my arms and legs over the next few weeks and was referred by my GP to a neuro in Wimbledon ( I think, for my own reassurance, my GP was never concerned at any stage ). As I am on a company medical scheme got to see the neuro after a wait of about 7 days...

He did the full clinical exam again, listened carefully to my symptoms... and said Benign Fasciculations ( didnt call it a syndrome ). He was happy to do whatever test I asked for, but was not positive about finding anything specific... I declined all further tests because of the 'rat hole' that this can take you into psychologically. He reckoned primarily extended periods anxiety / adrenaline / stress hormones contributed to this...

By the way I have also been going to a Cognitive Therapist to help with this... This has helped me to embrace rather than fear this d*mn thing!

It still changes all the time and continues to suck big time.... But hey, after about 19 months of this, it almost has become my friend!

Any additional specific questions just ping me on my personal address ( ).

hang in there!

That's interesting because I have also been referred for cognitive therapy! Been waiting 6 months so far. When I expressed my concern to my GP that it could be MND, he looked at me as if I was mad and referred me straight to the psychiatric liaison team (even though I don't have a history of going to my doctor fearing I have scary diseases). Then he said if it was MND, "time would tell". Very reassuring. The psych services were not impressed with his bedside manner!

Yep....I was told "time will tell"....not exactly a fun thing to hear, but all too common! Actually, the way mine worded it (in addition to "time will tell") is that right now I can think of myself as someone that is smelling smoke. We don't know if it's just smoke from a trash fire that is burning, or a forest fire coming my way. Hmmmmm, that's a pleasant thought. LOL.

Hey there
I've had a dead arm all day if it makes you feel any better. It has been on and off referring through to my hand too...on and off hand aches and pains...but my arm is pretty much dead.
I've had this before in my other arm and it cleared up after about 48 hours or so.
I am sure you'll be AOK.

As for the time will tell comment, my Neuro. (who is an **S specialist) said that twitching all over (even with some all over parathesia as you are describing) is benign 99.999999999% of the time. She looked me in the eye after a Neuro. exam and said I did not have it. No EMG, no further tests.

Hope you can take some comfort in that...
Cheers
K :)

You guys could be talking about carpal tunnel syndrome. Try wearing wrist splints at night. You can by them at any pharamacy. this has really helped my arm symptoms. If I don't wear them I wake with numbess of my arms and hands.
sincerely,
Beth
