Allergy-related Swallowing Trouble

Absolutely does not sound like bulbar at all. I've had the same symptoms (and fears) before. It went away. Focusing on the swallowing always makes it worse. I think it is allergy related. If you have stuff in your ears and mucus it will make it seem like you are having trouble swallowing. I've read a number of posts w/similar fears. It drove me crazy for months. I thought "this is it". Now I am fine.

I have exactly that! A feeling of mucus all the time at the back of my throat which I cannot shift. I keep thinking about my swallowing and it feels like I'm almost choking when I swallow saliva. Needless to say I can eat & drink just fine, plus when I'm busy I don't notice ANY swallowing problems. Isn't it funny how your mind can play such strange tricks on you?

last night I felt a sinus ache in my forehead....only it was just on the left side. Do sinuses/allergies ever attack one side of the head? My problems all seem to affect the left side.

to explain my worry, I theorize that perhaps I have a swallowing problem that is making phlegm stick in my throat, but then if I could swallow things like water or harder foods, would I have a problem with phlegm?

Does bulbar ALS affect one side of the throat, or does it usually just affect the throat as a whole, initially? also, if these symptoms were bulbar-onset, would I have worsening symptoms after over a month?

It is EXTREMELY common to have sinus headaches or any sinus pain on only one side of the head. I get problems on my right side all the time...and I frequently have excess post-nasal-drip. It can definitely make you more 'aware' of how you swallow, and make swallowing a bit of a chore at times indeed. Nothing to worry about AT ALL!!!

Side note: I have been diagnosed with the tendency to develop the types of sinus infections where my nose doesn't totally clog up, nor do I get as 'stuffy' as one might imagine with sinus problems. It's all in an area of the sinuses that are farther back, and thus don't affect my nasal breathing. I hope that makes sense. I do get pains above and under my right eye, as well as shooting pains in my ear and the right side of my head. This is all common to sinus problems...though not the most 'typical' sinus symptoms as seen on TV ads for sinus meds and such. The post nasal drip is very frequent.

Do you also notice when you are laying down that you might have an easier time breathing out of one side of your nose, and then if you turn your head, the breathing passage changes to the other side? This is very common with sinus stuff too.

Don't worry at all....Post nasal drip definitely does exactly what you are describing, and it can be VERY thick at times, almost to the point where you might feel like you're choking.

Talk to your doctor...and he/she might put you on a regimen of guaifisen (sp??). It thins out your mucous secretions.

Other than that, do NOT use sudafed, as it only acts by thickening everything up (that's how it dries you up when your nose is runny). I've asked my pharmacist before, and the ONLY over the counter product that helps thin mucous secretions is plain Robitussen (only the original formula).

I hope that helps you out. You might have some allergies that are making things especially bad right now.

Best wishes,
Amy

I'm no doctor, but it sounds like post nasal drip accompanied by anxiety. That "lump" or choking feeling is very common with anxiety. The more you focus on it the worse it gets. Have a glass of wine and relax! You have Nothing to worry about!
