38 Year Old Seeking Support: Story & Advice

Good Morning,First, please let me say that I have been reading this website for the last two weeks and what a great group of supportive people!I am a 38 year old American living in Australia and I was hoping I could tell you my story and get some opinions as to what you think. Here is the list that I prepared for the doctor which may help:Around October 6th, I started experiencing headaches which is very unusual for me. The headaches were accompanied with neck and shoulder pain. Had massage on October 9th and it hurt like hell.Developed an eye twitch in my right eye soon after. This lasted for a few days and I remember every time I would yawn or scrunch my face the eyelid would twitch.Googled headache and eye twitch and came up with brain tumour. Went into a complete panic! Then I noticed my right arm bicep twitching a few days later.Went to GP on October 16th and told her my symptoms and that I wondered if brain tumour. She said symptoms sounded too variable but would give me CT scan to ease my mind.October 30th – Clean CT scan.Twitching continued in right bicep (felt like nonstop) and then moved to left bicep and stopped in right bicep – thought strange so Googled just muscle twitching since no headaches anymore and BOOM found the dreaded disease! I remember thinking I was concerned as mine had only been in my eyelid and right bicep when I first googled and I was more hoping for the all over twitches like everyone else (go figure)!Within a few days twitching moved to 95% of my body and every part of my life is being affected. It is really taking it's toll and I have a 7 year old and 2 1/2 year old twins and of course have myself gone. My husband thinks I am nuts and we are walking a fine line. I cry all the time just visually thinking of that disease.I do not notice the twitching when I am up and moving. I notice it when sitting at desk at work sitting still, relaxing on couch at night or when wake up in the morning.Feels mostly like popcorn popping at different parts of my body or strong jolts. Sometimes get the shaky vibration ones but mostly just “pings”. Do not occur together…one body part will twitch and then another.Parts affected in order of occurrence:? Eyelid? Biceps? Calves? Thighs (front & back)? Forearms (front & back)? Hands? Feet? Back (rarely)? Buttocks (rarely)Twitching has now been happening for approximately 39 days since start of eyelid twitching but has become more widespread and stronger.Other relevant issues:-I have been under quite a bit of stress for the last year as I had a fallout with my inlaws. I was very close with my sister-in-law and really wear the stress of us not speaking as I don't have any family here. I do, however, have great support through many friends. But the family fallout is something I would think about daily.-My husband is a stay at home Dad and went back to work part-time in the evenings right around the time this all started.-I was panicked about a brain tumor when this seemed to start and have always been a bit of a panicker about my health.I have been to the doctor and had blood tests and they found that I was Vitamin D deficient (27 - should be between 75 and 250) and my ALT is elevated a bit to 38 with the normal cut off range being 30.I did a Google and found that Vitamin D can be associated with muscle twitching but mine just feels too "angry" to be just that.I was then sent to a nuero for what I thought was going to be a consultation but it was actually for my carpal tunnel and he did not want to humor my questions at all - he was a retired neuro who was clearly there just to perform the tests and was over the whole bedside manner thing. BUT when he did the test he did stick a needle in my bicep and the muscle between my index finger and thumb. Is this the equivalent of the EMG's that you all talk about on here? Would that have shown anything sinister? I am going back to my GP today to get those results. He only stuck the one arm and not the other but if this was the same type of EMG that you talk about when you say "clean EMG" and that was the arm that first started twitching and there are no problems can I assume that it is okay? He did confirm carpal tunnel in both wrists.I don't believe I have any weakness but it is amazing how weak you feel just from thinking you may have something dreadful. My legs all of a sudden feel like jelly! And the fatigue from being so stressed out. I am not eating at all and have lost about 10 pounds in one week!Thank you so much for reading this post. If you have any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.Roxanne

Your twitching started like mine.. thinking you had some aweful disease. Mine started after 5 months of very bad health anxiety and some stress. You sound just like the rest of us here... BFS. I have been twitching all over for 8 months now. I've had all the tests which come out normal and no real explanation as to what caused this. I am sure you are just fine. Don't feel bad, my husband thinks I'm nuts too. ~Leslie

Thanks Barbie...I have read your story and I feel like I can relate. You are an inspiration.Do you know about the question I asked regarding the EMG with the needle in my bicep and muscle between thumb and index? Is that what all of you had here? It really hurt me so I didn't have him do the other arm and now if this is the test you have all had, I am kicking myself that I didn't have him do it.However, the arm he did do is the arm that I had twitching in first...He didn't have the needle in the muscles for very long at all - should it have stayed in longer? What a nightmare roller coaster ride this is going to be as I am only just over a month into this!!!I admire all of you so much! Can I get anymore replies from others...PLEASE??

Thanks PrickLedPin,I haven't had any issues with the neck since those few days and it was more like a feeling of sleeping on it wrong. I do sit at a computer all day and have quite poor posture. I will mention it to my doctor the next time I see him.Does anyone know my question regarding the EMG and the two needles I had in the arm? Is this the same as what you all talk about getting done? Should I be less sure if it comes back clean and it was only done in one arm? How long did the needles stay in when you were tested? Mine were only for a minute or so in each of the two muscles and I had to flex and push my finger against his arm?So sorry I am rambling, I have been a mess and am just hoping to hear some information. Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond to me - I really appreciate it!

i am in my fith month of bodywide twitching now. my twitching started in my right thumb after a few months of massive health anxiety (brain tumor too) and became widespread within days after internet research! i felt exactly as you describe and this board has been my relief whenever i feel anxious or doubtful.everyting you describe sounds completely like bfs!!!i think you have your results by now and your gp explained everything to you (and i am sure results came back normal except for carpal tunnel) ! so ,i know easier said then done, try to sleep, eat something, enjoy your kids and try to calm down- it´s just bfs! it will take some time but you will start feeling better, you will be fine!

roxannemur,I know very well what you are going through. My journey with this started very similar to yours. I have an insane number of posts on here and am like a broken record but with new people I never assume they know my story. I went through numerous tests and saw many neuros and 17 months later here are a few things I have learned that might be of interest to you.1. The EMG (unless done 6 months or more out from the symptoms) is not going to give you the definitive answers you want. And even after the 6 months or so, the better information comes from whether or not your symptoms are progressing and making you disabled or weak. Sure any type of EMG at any time can give you some positive information but most of us want 100% reassurance and in my journey talking to neuros and observing their treatment of me I am not convinced it does this very well.2. Twitching can have many causes and many are not understood or possible to identify. There are however meds that can help with it if it really interferes with your life.3. This board is your best source of support since those without these symptoms do not really understand it and usually do think we are a bit crazy.4. I am confident that you are probably like most of us and will be fine but just need to let some time pass so you are assured it will just be annoying not disabling. In the meantime do what you can to pamper yourself. Do whatever makes you feel good. Get meds if you really need them. My most experience neuro told me that he has never seen an ALS patient who started with sudden onset bodywide twitching. He has treated ALS patients since the 1950s. I hope this helps.Krackersones

We've had others here with vitamin D defieciency and they found relief with supplementation; it does, however, take a while to get your levels back up so realize it is not going to turn around in a week. Here's a reputable website: Oh, relatives and falling out - that's enought to make anyone a little anxious. Look, if you continue to Dx yourself you will drive your anxiety - surely you have better things to do with your time (mend bridges?) Surely also, there are many things in your life that you can enjoy and deserve your focus more than twitches. A quick read through here will assure you that there are many others who have the same symptoms as you and have been around for many years with no progression of illness and no fatalities. Good luck.

Thank you so much to all of you who replied. It really helps to get input on such a scary thing.I went to the GP and got my results and I returned a normal EMG on the right arm. I think the report said that he tested 3 muscles. I am hoping that it means everything is okay since that is the first arm that started twitching after the eyelid and continues to twitch. Since it has been twitching for over a month, I am hoping that most likely it would have shown something if it was amiss. The nerve conduction studies were all fine too, except for carpal tunnel which I knew I had.The neurologist who performed the exam was a jerk to put it mildly so I didn't get a whole lot out of him. He just asked me why I would think I have *** and I said to him, "Because I am twitching all over my body." His response was, "Twitching is not a symptom of *** and is almost always caused by anxiety as the number one factor". I thought this was interesting since after reading so many posts here, some neuros say yes to anxiety and others no. And he did not know my mental state to make such a comment. He has been a neuro for 40+ years and also has a psychiatry qualification. He really almost seemed annoyed that I would think that I have *** and that I was wasting his time by having him do the EMG.I have also now been to 3 GP's who all say it is anxiety. I do have terrible anxiety so am hoping that is all it is. I do feel really strong from all of the anxiety adrenaline running through my body so I know I don't have any weakness.I did find it interesting that 3 people who responded to me have all had it start after health anxiety. That is just too coincidental, I think. You have all been a wealth of support and I am going to stick around if that if okay with all of you. I take much comfort in the fact that noone here has ever gotten a terrible diagnosis and I am NOT about to be the first!!!Cheers,Roxanne

Sorry your neuro was a jerk. I met a few of those myself. I think your attitude is right on target and will hopefully have you sailing through this small speed bump in a long, happy life.

Hello - The type of twitching you describe is very similar to me -- the single pops all over the body -- especially while at rest. I have all your spots and many more - including the tongue and face -- basically, you name the body part, and I twitch there.

Sounds similar to my story and most everyone else around here. Probably nothing, but see a good neuro if you are really worried. The doctor that did my EMG (not my actual neurologist) was a bit of a jerk too. He specializes in NMDs and although he didn't say it, I got the impression he kind of felt like I was wasting his time. For what it's worth, I'm in the camp that believes the anxiety can bring this on or at the very least make it worse. It will get better, trust me. Get the anxiety under control and you'll start feeling better. I am anti-med, so my advice is to exercise and keep yourself busy. That got me through the rough times.

I went the med route to calm my nervous system but have found that strenous aerobic exercise helps in a similar way. If I could exercise all day and did not need to sleep I may not need meds. I think exercise helps induce relaxation just like some meds do. Definitely try exercise first and then meds only as a last resort.Krackersones
