Help Needed: Swallowing Difficulty

Hi everyoneI've noticed in the last day or so that I seem to have a problem swallowing. It feels like there is a lump in my throat when I try and swallow- and it's more noticeable when I'm not eating or drinking. Has anyone else had this? This is terrifying.....I've never noticed this before but it definitely feels different :(Please help!

Lump in the throat feelings are globus sensations. They have nothing to do with any kind of Motoneron disease. They are soooooooooo common in BFS and are a lot influenced by anxiety.

Chrissi, thank you. You are so knowledgable! Can you explain to me how that differs from the problems that MND patients have with swallowing...? Just for my peace of mind....Thank you x

Thanks Submarine- but I can't open that thread for some reason. What is the title of it? I'll try and search for it rather than following the link....

Yasmin,Not sure if you've checked out the chat room yet. But its a great place to ask lots of questions to fellow BFSers and get immediate answers. Here is the link:-Matt

Submarine- Thanks- so that post (Onset of bulbar symptoms) says slurred speech comes first- is this correct?Matt- thanks. I'll definitely check out the chat room- but it's difficult when I'm at work! Matt- have you ever had the swallowing issue?Yasmin x

Yasmin,I can't tell you how common this is. I went through this and still do from time to time. Then my mind will refocus from my twitching to my swallowing. It's really sad. I think it's anxiety-based. I get little pieces of food caught in the back of my throat once in a while. I'm pretty much over worrying about it, since it's been a while since I've had that "perceived" symptom and it comes and goes. For instance, if I'm not thinking about it, I won't experience it. It's so very psychological with us - I think.Mitra

Use the search funtion for "swallowing" and you will see just how common this has always been. I also wonder how many less BFSers would have swallowing issues if there were no such thing as bulbar....hmmmm

Thanks everyone. Mitra, you are right- it gets better if I don't think about it. I can't help thinking that this is the "start" of something worse, which is what I think with all these symptoms- it's so frustrating! I wish I had never heard of ALS, I swear....!xx

I promise you it will be better after time. It's like we all have some weird disease that makes us imagine swallowing issues. But they seem very real at the same time. It's just too coincidental that so many of us have them, and twitching as well, along with health anxiety.Hang in there, it will get better. I've been in your shoes, but things do get easier, as time goes by. I'm only 5 months into this mess, but I already feel more secure that everything I'm experiencing, while weird, is benign.Mitra
