Sensitive Throat and Coughing Fits

I seem to have a very sensitive throat. If I am not constantly clearing it ( like there is something stuck in it) Every little thing makes me cough which seems to turn into a coughing fit more often than not. I am getting sick of it! BFS do you think? Any solutions on dealing with it from the more knowledgable BFSers?cheers/thanksRodger

I have the same thing. (well it used to be much worse, but now comes and goes). I haven't posted here much because I have decided to stay away. Anyhow I believe the most likely cause is anxiety, and possibly some reflux. The only cure....stop thinking about it. Possibly take some antacids. It does get better, but it took me like 4 months.

i get the throat clearing all the time, its like a compulsion, once i start noticing that i do it, i can't stop. IF i stay very busy i never notice, idle time is not our friend. I do notice that when it gets real bad it feels like the front of my neck is vibrating, so i think it might be a little BFS mixed in with the old anxiety. Hope it gets better.

Thanks for response guys-appreciated. Yes anxiety appears to play such a big part in all this! I must admit it gets heaps worse when I am anxious. The trick is to manage the anxiety demon- easier said than done at times,as we all know!hmm.hmmm ( sorry just clearing my throat..again!) cheersRodger

Twitching can effect ANY muscle, including those in your throat and esophagus. The reason I know this is because I've been have swallowing problems and there's no explanation for them. I recently had a barium swallow and a nasal scope and both were normal. I have the sensation that food is going into my nose when I swallow. My ENT had a name for it but I can't remember what it is. he basically concluded that my twitching has likely moved into my throat and esophagus (been having chest pain too). If there's a muscle and your twitches are diffuse, you're likely going to experience twitching even in the odd places. Also, swallowing problems + twithing doesn't always indicate something nasty.

twitchin +swallowing problems on this site are indicative of ANXIETY PERIOD. I think this crap causes OCD, i can now obsess over any voluntary or involuntary aspect of my body. Swallowing is just the latest that i choose to torment myself with. LOL Its time for a vacation away from myself.

I went to an allergist at my Gp's bidding a few year's back and she said this kind of stuff was due to sensitivity: changes in cold, particulates, etc., and while it had nothing to do with allergies was not uncommon and Rx'd some allergy type meds to calm it down. She said it also fit in with the whole hyper-nervous system thing. I didn't take the allergy stuff. But I have found that drinking some teas really helps with the throat stuff; for instance those with licorice root, lemon grass, etc. If you want I can give you some names, brands, to see if they are available to you.

i will try the allergy medicine, i have zyrtec in the cupboard. Thanks for the suggestion, i am starting to think that this flares up when the front neck muscles twitch and vibrate, all part of the fun. I just whoofed down a double cheese, large fry and a diet coke, so i must be good. LOL

I too am having to constantly to clear my throat and feel the need to cough. My throat has been sore off & on since this whole thing has started. Not sure if it is due to the coughing. It really freaks me out because I feel like my voice is garbled but I am having no trouble eating or swallowing. It is a vicious cycle of anxiety. Any tips?

If you don't think it is a seasonal or temperature change thing then you need to do something to counteract your anxiety. Do you do any yoga or meditation, breathing, qigong, or relaxation exercises? You need to do something for yourself to find a way to alleviate this build up of anxiety and stress in your body. They used to have a self-guided free meditation at this site but it is gone now - however you can try this one which is basic. You don't have to devote a lot of time to it - 15 minutes should work after you get what the basics are and the methodology. If this one doesn't work for you try another - there are many out there for free.Self-healing is something everyone should consider: it has no bad side-effects, costs nothing most times, it gives you some control over your symptoms, and provides you with a small moment of what we rarely give ourselves (a peaceful uninterrupted few minutes of time).
