Dad's Arm Twitching in Hospital

I went to visit my dad today in the hospital. He had a collapsed lung and has to be there for a few days. While I was talking with him I noticed his arm thumping away. Really noticably twitching. I looked at his other arm and it had little twitches too. I asked my dad if it always does that. He said yes, he gets them all over all the time. I noticed something similar the last time he was in the hospital, but he pretty much brushed off my questions. Today I told him it was really important that he answer me and asked him how long that was going on. His answer? Ten, maybe twenty years! He says it's been so long that he's had muscle twitching that he can't even remember when it started. He gets them everywhere. Sometimes they move his toes or his fingers. You can see his bicep jumping just like some of the calf muscle youtube clips. I was floored! Not to mention totally relieved. My dad has been examined by a neuro for unrelated issues and has even had an EMG. No signs of ALS. He's just a twitcher. When I told him what a freak-out these twitches caused for me almost a year ago he laughed. He said he never thought to even go to the doctor about them and has had no problems associated with them.Just thought I'd share in case this might help someone else. It sure helped me.

Thanks Becky. It's great to hear about people who twitch away for yers and years and dont even think about it, such as your father. Without meangin to be, he is something of an inspiration, proving to all us worriers that there is nothing to be gained about worrying about twitching. I hope he gets better from his current health problems soon.RegardsSimon

My dad is the same way. His calves twitch non stop and I have seen his arms jumping around. He says he has had that for 20 years or more. He always tells me to stop worrying about my twitching.

This is one of the surprises that I had once I had acquired my own symptoms. I had kept it from my family hoping beyond hope that I didn't have the dreaded disease. Once I did tell my father about my concerns he took no time in raising his pantleg and showing me that he had the same twitches. He had never once been concerned about them. He had noticed that when he had stressful situations, that they would become worse. He also has an essential tremor in his hands as my Grandfather did. My brother now has this tremor. As my dad has aged I have noticed that the tremor has gotten considerably worse. I first noticed his when he was about my age. I have to believe that there is a connection between et's and bfs. My mother also has extremely bad rls which I acquired several years ago. Also anxiety and depression run very high in my family. I'm glad this was posted and really would like to hear from others with family members who have bfs, fibromyalgia, rls,et's etc.
