Twitching 4 Weeks - What Is It?

Hello, I began twiching 4 weeks ago. It came out of nowhere and i have twiched all over my body. Right now it is mostly in my legs. I have been freaking out like the rest of you when I "googled" my symptoms and now I'm convinced I have ALS. I went to my doctor who blamed it on my overactive thyroid. I went to the ER cause I got so freaked out. They also blamed it on my thyroid. I saw my Endocinologit who say the thyroid can cause this also. I had an EMG done which was negative. I am trying to get into a neurologist but can't until July. They are that booked up. So, I still sit here and twitch. The only time I don't is when I'm moving so I try to move around alot. Some days are worse than others. I am taking Lexapro for the anxiety. This has ruined my life. My husand thinks I'm nuts and I have a 22 month old son to take care of. I feel like I can't function anymore cause of the fear. I have no weakness but am still terrified. I have spent hours and read thousands of pages on the internet all with confilicting information. My question, can overactive thyroid cause twitching? Thanks to anyone with information on this.

Glad to hear your EMG was clear and this is very reassuring. Yes thyroid problems can cause fasciculations but I assume you will have had thyroid function tests recently. If these were normal then it is more likely I think that you are one of us BFS'ers!Either way, a benign explanation is good whether ti is thyroid or BFS!All the bestSimon

This is one of the things they tested me for - I would have been pleased if it had come back positive! An explanation! It's scarier when there isn't one. I'm a year on and there's still no reason for it. Be reassured that time will make you feel better. I'm sitting here typing now and I know I'm twitching but I don't notice it. If I stop and think about them - back they come! I feel the odd one during the day and lots at night when I lay down. I even felt them in my ears the other night!! They just dont worry me any more. I Googled too and I found out that ALS has a life expectancy of 2 - 5 years. After a year I guess I'd be in a state by now. I have no weakness at all. Listen to the people on this board - they all know how real this is and they will believe you. I know that the US health system is different but wouldn't they whip you in quick for an EMG if they were worried? In the UK you know you're in trouble when the old NHS are quick!!! Last time I saw a neurologist he said "come back in a year" .... speaks volumes! It's hard at the moment - I've been exactly where you are, but trust me, it does get easier.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad I found this board. I just I wish I knew for definite that this is benign. I do have an overactive thyroid which I am on medication for. That is when all this started, after I started the medication. I just don't know. It's not so much the twitching but the thought of **S that bothers me the most. I just pray to god everyday that I will be ok. I wish I could get into a neurologist sooner. That would put my mind at ease but there arean't many where I live. Oh well. For now I will come here for support.

To Barbie, overactive thyroid can for sure cause twitching. This happened to me when my twitching started in september 2007. I had been taking synthroid for hypothyroidism for 2 years and suddenly I swung hyper and didn't know it. I had heart palps, sweating, twitching etc. come on over nite. I went to the doctor and my labs showed I was indeed hyperthyroid. I had to reduce my medication. Unfortunately, the twitching never completely went away, but the other hyper symptoms did.If you are definitely hyper thyroid, I would bet that is the cause of your twitching. Do you have graves disease? I was diagnosed with hashimotos.Linda

Yep, I have Graves plus an enlarged thryoid and nodules. The symptoms are crazy.. anxiety, tremors, sweating, and now this twitching came on suddenly. I pray that is what is causing this. It's scary cause Hyperthyroidism can cause muscle weakness and in severe cases muscle wasting. It can mimic **S which is why this is so scary. I'm so glad I found this board to know I am not the only with this problem. It has been so helpful.
