EEG Vs Nerve Test: Disappointing Neuro Appt

Well, today I finally had my neuro appt and I must say I am a tad disappointed. I told him about the twitching, the wierd sensations, and the jerking/jolting. He checked my reflexes, but did NOT test my strength. He is doing an EEG, NOT an EMG. What in the world is an EEG? Is this the same thing as a nerve conductivity test?He says he wants to rule out seizures which I think is a load of bull. If he was going to rule out anything it should have been ALS or an MND. It seems he was more concerned about the jerking than the twitching.I so thought I would get some peace of mind today, and now I am right back where I started, it seems. He did mention that he didnt think it was anything serious, but I am still upset. There was no mention of ALS or an MND, although MS has been ruled out since I just had a spinal tap done not that long ago. Also a brain tumor has been ruled out since I just had an MRI not that long ago.I am still sure this is BFS, but there was no mention of that either!! :crying: I blew it. I shouldve stood up for myself and specifically asked if this could be ALS or something bad. But since he made the point to say he didnt think it was anything serious, I didnt ask. You can bet next week when I go in for my EEG I will be asking ALOT of questions. This isnt seizures. That much I am SURE of!Thanks for letting me vent, and if anyone here knows anything about EEG, please enlighten me!

EEG would be for epilepsy, don't worry it is unlikely, sounds to me like the neuro is inexperienced. The only time I have ever had an EEG is part of an experiment.

They will strap some leads to your head and have you perform some tasks to measure your brain output. This is routine and would be consistent with the way they operate. Be glad he did not see anything immideatly wrong. However, I would suggest you change doctors now because you and him are a odds from the get go. This is probably a long term illness until you learn to deal with it. So change now and avoid the headaches. EEG =Electroencephalogram"An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of your brain. Special sensors (electrodes) are attached to your head and hooked by wires to a computer. The computer records your brain's electrical activity on the screen or on paper as wavy lines. Certain conditions, such as seizures, can be seen by the changes in the normal pattern of the brain's electrical activity."-http://www.webmd.com/epilepsy/electroencephalogram-eeg-21508

Sounds to me like he did r/o (to his satisfaction) ALS or an MND. My 1st neuro did an EEG and never suggested an EMG--based on my normal neuro exam, (I went to him for a few years). Oddly enough, my EEG originally showed some minor abnormalities, but in all subsequent ones, (several over 3 decades it has been normal). I would feel reassured that he didn't see any need for an EMG, (neuros can access your strength through observing you as well as the standard strength tests). I've been told that they can spot most MND's when the patient walks in. My my experience, neuros always seem to want to do an EEG when I mention jerking or twitching. They're also a large part of sleep studies. I'm sure if you insist on an EMG and voice your concerns he'll give you one for your own peace of mind. Best Wishes, Denise

I used to think doctor's knew alot. But after a few years of trying to get a few of my ailements fixed..Herniated disk in back, eye twitch, ankle pain, problem with knee...I decided that half of the time they are just guessing.I am not attempting to insult the doctor's and other medical professionals on this board. I expect most of the time they are doing their best. But being a doctor seems to be more of an art than a science IMO.-43RichyThe43rd
