Excessive Saliva - Anxiety or BFS?

Since my most recent and most intense bout of this disorder I seem to have developed excessive saliva ??? (Along with constant leg aches.) Has anyone else experienced this ??

I don't know if this is anxiety driven or BFS related. I am able to sleep fine without choking or drooling, actually my mouth seems dry during the night. I would think that if this symptom was uncontrollable, like the twitches, then it would occur during the nighttime hours also ?? Right

Can anybody relate to this ??

I have had similar issues skip. Comes and goes. If it's BFS related I am not certain but could be. My legs ache mostly in my hips and knees but it seems better as of late.

I have heard that anxiety, along with virtually any oral disorder can result in excess saliva production. If your worried about ALS, don't be. Its somewhat of a misconception that ALS CAUSES excess saliva when really the only reason drooling is ever an issue in it is because the tongue and mouth have weakened and saliva can not be moved, swallowed or managed.

So don't worry, I've had that before too. I think it can also be another one of those things that if you focus on it you notice it a great deal more.

I looked into this a while back—authorities on ALS agree that drooling with ALS is caused by inability to swallow, not overproduction of saliva. If you're generating too much saliva, that can be a symptom of a whole bunch of things (including dry or irritated mouth, minor cold, or the smell of holiday cooking—mmm, :D) ), but not of motor neuron disease. See for the details.

My favorite quote (from an ALS site): "swallowing problems reveal the surprising amount of saliva we normally produce and swallow without thought." Produce a bit more (or think about it!) and you'll have difficulty swallowing it all.
