Fasciculations and MS: Neuro's Opinion

P.S. I know you mentioned about not having pins & needles , numbness etc...

Just in case you do get it, it's very common with BFS. I have both on a daily basis to some extent. Also, anxiety tends to contribute to both. So, if you start to worry about these symptoms, chances are you'll end up getting them. So just in case you do, remember this post and don't stress about it!

Thanks. I think I may have actually had them a little bit. When I got out of bed this morning a had a couple of tiny tingles in my feet, which I remember reading about on here.

Do fasciculations in MS start in one area and gradually migrate to another? Or can they be random all over the body like with BFS? Also, isn't most of the time with MS you get your symptoms in sudden acute attacks rather than progressivley as they get worse and worse?

It seems like the more I read the more symtpoms I have. As soon as I read that MS can cause cognitive impairment now it seems like Im having a harder time thinking, but I guess worrying and anxiety can cause that to right?

Whoa, thats weird. Yeah I bet thats how it got started for me. I havent eaten hardly at all for over a week and spend all my time worrying about this stuff, I've been really tired throughout the day recently too.

My twitches cause me anxiety which cause me not to eat which cause me to twitch which causes me anxiety which causes me not to eat..... I hope thats the case.

Shelley,

Did your Dr. say if when you go back to eating if it will take the twitches away. I was not eating right when I started the twitches because I was sick I lost like 20 pounds in two three weeks..yeah i looked awful..I just cant see how he says that it can create twitches by not just eating right because once you start eating then the twitches should go away. Not arguing the point, just wondering if he said it would eventually go away or did we do damage by doing this? Thanks..Jenn

Yes there is a difference. Spasticity is a form of muscle overactivity. A spastic muscle is one in which a muscle resists being stretched out, and the resistance to stretch is greater the faster the muscle is moved.

Muscle twitching is the result of minor local muscle contractions or the uncontrollable twitching of a single muscle group caused by a single motor nerve fiber. Nerves firing make muscle move. Spastic is like a muscle seized up....Jenn

No, clonus and fasciculations are WAY different, though some of us with fascics do get a few beats of clonus on exam, and it is perfectly normal for us.

How were your reflexes when your doctor checked?

Blessings,
Sue
