Right and Left Tongue Shape Differences

Here I go again ...

The other night while brushing my teeth, I decided to brush my tongue as I had a nasty taste in my mouth after being out for a meal earlier that night.

I noticed that at the tip of my tongue, and round the edges, the left and right side differ slightly in shape. I also noticed when resting my tongue outside my mouth, that the middle to back of my tongue differs from left to right side.

The right side seems "higher" in build than the left side does, and it's quite a visible difference in size. The thing is, and I keep telling myself this ...

If anything was wrong with my tongue, ie: atrophy, I'd be experiencing swallowing difficulties, speaking difficulties (wouldn't I?).

I guess I'm looking for more reassurance, but after the whole buzzing tongue sensations I had (which have passed) the other week, I'm more paranoid than ever. I'm hoping the common sense above is true and I can push myself through yet another stupid period of fear.

My tongue is different on each side too. My neuro looked at my tongue and wasn't concerned. He was only interested in me being able to move my tongue without any problems.

It's ironic you mention this because I JUST noticed the exact same thing about my tongue recently. Except mine is the opposite of yours...my left side seems "higher" than the right. I see a line from front to back down the middle of my tongue as well as a line (or slight indentation) that goes around the parimeter (about a 1/4" from the edge). I had concerns about my tongue (twitching) when I was at the neuro 2 mths ago and she looked at my tongue and said "normal bulk and size". So, the lines we see are probably where different groups of muscles meet. As far as the side to side difference, I think I've figured out it just the way we tighen/relax our tongue. Believe me, I've stared at it in the mirror long enough to figure out that it just the way I'm tensing it. I'm sure your doing the same thing. Do you also have a circular indentation on the top tip of your tongue like me too?

My tongue is also asymetrical, so are a lot of peoples. What you describe is totally normal.
